Acting methods, discovering your art

What are the acting methods? What does their effectiveness depend on? How to identify your own method? Some of the principles on which the SRC teaching method is based are contained in the answers to these questions.

What are the acting methods?

There are several methods of acting. Each has its importance and requires to be known, studied, experimented. For this reason, the best-known methods are among the fundamentals of the Triennio Accademico and are also covered in the various Labs.

Each method focuses on different aspects to focus on, techniques to internalize and manage different emotions and return them to the public in their truth.
The most important figures who contributed to defining the acting techniques, necessary for actors and actresses to play different roles at different times and with the same intensity, they are Stanislavski, Strasberg, Meisner And Coast.

Stanislavski emphasizes the importance of emotional truth, of character development and the use of personal experiences to connect with “him”. Strasberg, with the Method Acting, encourages using personal experiences to draw on your own emotions and memories, and create authentic interpretations. Meisner, instead, supports the evidence of sincere reactions of the moment, focuses on living imaginary circumstances truthfully, to restore them to the public. Coast, with the mimic method, focus on control of movements and body to dominate the scene and enhance the effectiveness of the performances.

Each of these approaches offers actors and actresses different tools and perspectives that have created memorable performances throughout the history of cinema and theater.

What does the effectiveness of one method rather than another depend on?

What is true, and what we have proven through experience, is that There is no one-size-fits-all method and all, and that one method does not exclude another.
Actors and actresses are people with distinctive characters and different abilities to express emotion. The effectiveness of a method lies in being similar to personality and toinclination of the actor/actress, to his predisposition to do so in order to naturally embody roles and characters.

Actors and actresses can adopt more than one method in the same role, balancing different aspects taken from each. The secret is to find the right proportion and get to the truth.

How to identify your own method? The SRC method

Every student of the SRC follows a natural path. A journey that starts from itself, to arrive progressively, through one experimental and research study, to find your own method.

It always starts from listening. It's the moment when boys and girls open up, revealing theirs weaknesses and strengths, their often silent potential. And when the journey begins, the potential comes out and the weaknesses become more and more. Characteristics such as being shy and introverted, transposed into acting, become a new look at things making the interpretation more true and authentic.

Proof of this is the trip with the SRC of Nicole Sorace, the first young performer in the Calabrian and Italian scene to co-star in a Disney film.

At SRC we guarantee one in-depth study of all methods acting with a focus always on the present and constant attention to social changes. We adapt the methods to changes in languages and of society, to the way of communicating.

The SRC's own method is not rigidly anchored to any of the traditional methods specifically. In fact, we follow the teachings and legacy of the great Gian Maria Volonté, one of the greatest experts on 20th century cinema. Like him we believe that being a good actor and a good actress means know all the methods, make them your own and know how to discern which one to use depending on the case. To do this it is necessary know yourself, be aware of your abilities, recognize them and train them. Only in this way can the truth be reached and transmitted, the ultimate goal to which every interpreter who wants to do this job well should aspire.
