Submitting a self tape has become an obligatory step for anyone who aspires to work as an actor or actress. It is one of the first business cards with which you present your interpretative skills on video during casting and auditions, with which you can obtain parts or be selected to access professional paths.
The most frequent errors that can compromise the result of a self tape are:
- The background is not neutral, with too many details or distractions
- The framing is unstable and not flush with the camera
- Inadequate lighting, which remains behind, creating a shadow.
- Poor quality audio due to recording in noisy environments or with a distant microphone
- Sending via non-professional channels such as WhatsApp
- Vertical shooting from smartphone
- Sending the file through inappropriate platforms
Each of these details must be taken care of because it helps to build a professional image, to convey your passion for acting and to create a sense of closeness with those who have never seen you and know you for the first time.
Here are some tips to make your talent stand out, and allow those on the other side to see your potential.
Create a DIY, but professional environment
A simple, distraction-free background helps keep the focus on what really matters: your performance. Opt for a white or neutral colored wall, avoiding messy environments or with objects that can distract the gaze. A refined setting will highlight your interpretation.
Camera Stability
Make sure the camera is stable, preferably on a tripod or fixed surface. A shaky video can give an unprofessional impression and distract from your performance. Position the camera at eye level to get a natural shot that shows you at your best. If you use your smartphone, place it horizontally, not vertically.
Lighting
Lighting is a key element for your online audition. Avoid light behind you and shadows on your face. A uniform and soft light can be obtained with correctly directed lamps or by taking advantage of natural light. In the case of artificial lights you could opt for light rings, but it is not mandatory to invest in expensive equipment. A well-placed desk lamp will also work.
Get ready
The first step is to choose the scene or monologue to record. If you have received specifications be sure to follow them. Choose a material that makes you feel confident and best expresses your abilities. It is not necessary to be perfect, the important thing is to be able to be authentic.
Study the character
Take time to understand the character. Read the part you have chosen carefully and try to get into the character's mentality. This will help you play the scene more naturally and convincingly. Every effort will contribute to the success of your performance.
Learn the part by heart
When you have full command of the text, you can concentrate completely on the interpretation, without distractions. Knowing your lines by heart will allow you to be more spontaneous and natural and therefore more convincing.
Registration
It's completely normal to feel nervous while recording your self-tape. Don't try to be perfect. Mistakes are part of the creative process and can even make your performance more human and real. If you stumble over a word or lose track slightly during recording, don't panic. Continue acting as you would in a live scene. These little stumbles can showcase your ability to react and maintain focus, valuable qualities for actors and actresses. Focus on the scene, not the expectations.
Evidence
Do some testing before recording the final version. This will help you feel more comfortable and perfect your performance. Don't worry if it takes a few takes, it's completely normal.
Final shot
When you're ready, record your final take. Try to do everything in one take to maintain naturalness. If necessary, take multiple shots and choose the best one.
Sending the Self-Tape
The recommended format for sending the self tape is usually mp4. The most suitable professional platform, however, is wetransfer.
By following these tips, you will be able to eliminate any elements that could distract those who are examining you. Every small detail will help to involve those who watch you in your interpretation.
With a well-made self tape you demonstrate your acting skills, but also your dedication and commitment. It is always the opportunity for a new beginning, whether educational or professional.
