Casting and dubbing, experiences and teachings

In the months of April and May we organized two in-depth events on the casting and on dubbing.

Giving our students the opportunity to compete with great masters meant being able to experiment and try their hand at various activities, inspired and guided by the example and advice of high level professionals.

To bring their experience to the SRC Adriana Sabbatini casting teacher, Carlo Valli, Renato Cortesi And Pasquale Anselmo, dubbing teachers, respectively voices of Robin Williams, Gérard Depardieu and Nicolas Cage.

The more time passes, the more the masters, the real ones, have something to teach. They do this through practice and by recalling anecdotes and moments of life which over time take on collective value, historical memory from which to draw learn to be and not just do, with humility and passion. Two qualities that mark the difference between those who work for "money" and those who work because they have fire inside.

This is why we are particularly keen that students become contaminated during their training by listening to the testimonials of those who have lived between different generations, adapting to new tools and ways of working.

It is also useful for discovering the latest innovations, reaping the advantages and recognizing their limitations, as in the case of artificial intelligence, and for having a clear look at how the sector really works.

We should never stop looking for these comparisons, because in the mistakes and efforts of those who were there before us there are the secrets of an artisan craft that is learned by imitation, and which then make the difference for the male and female artists, the doubles-actors and the doublesactresses who you want to become.

Internship with casting director Adriana Sabbatini

Trainer and author of numerous television programs for Rai, Adriana Sabbatini has been working as a casting director for television and film productions since the 1990s. Among the programs that bear his signature: "The boss of bosses", "A marriage", "The match - The defense of Luzhin", "The Bastards of Pizzofalcone", "Come un dolfino", "Aldo Moro".

The 20th and 21st of April during the two days of training boys and girls learned techniques and secrets of how to be in front of a camera preparing with Adriana Sabbatini to have more confidence in the next auditions.

Among the topics covered during the internship, the difference between cinematographic and theatrical acting, the shot and the reverse shot, the listening plane and the different framing planes. Participants tested their voice, facial expressions and body and space management to find the balance between technique and spontaneity.

Dubbing masterclass with Carlo Valli, Renato Cortesi and Pasquale Anselmo

Before being voice actors, the teachers of the dubbing masterclass on 11 and 12 May were actors. Film, TV and theater actors, in addition to diction, have learned to manage and alternate different registers without ever losing fidelity to the different performances while keeping them the same every time.

They have become the voices in great cinema and animated films. To name a few: "Dead Poets Society", "Good Morning Vietnam", "Will Hunting", "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", "Toy Story", "The Last Metro", "Rosy Storm", "The Family Man", "Return to Cold Mountain", "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Captain Corelli's Mandolin", "The Aristocats", "The Wizard of Oz", "Obelix and Centurion."

In the Auditorium of the School which we will soon name after Gian Maria Volonté, Carlo Valli, Renato Cortesi and Pasquale Anselmo recalled their beginnings, the challenges and some of the anecdotes that made the history of their careers, and the success of foreign actors in Italy who we love and recognize thanks to them: Robin Williams, Gérard Depardieu, Nicolas Cage.

With them we wanted to name the dubbing room of the School after Oreste Lionello, which would welcome them the following day to work on the exercise and practice of dubbing.

"We were particularly keen that the dubbing room of the school be named after someone like Lionello who left a mark with his voice and with the sensitivity and genius of translations and adaptations. Like the translation into verse of Cyrano of which Pasquale Anselmo and Carlo Valli masterfully read two extracts, demonstrating that a good dubber is first of all a great actor" declared the Director of the School Walter Cordopatri.

Precisely for this reason the title chosen for the Masterclass was "Sì can fare", a tribute to the dubbing of Lionello's "Frankenstein Junior" and a phrase that has always accompanied our School's desire to create a professional artistic training center in Cittanova for boys and girls who dream of becoming actors and actresses.

During the dubbing masterclass, the students worked on lip sync, on the diction and thearticulation. They played various characters and recorded their voices in the room dubbing some scenes, guided and directed by the great masters, by their feedback and their advice.

“It was exciting to see boys and girls having lessons with Casting director Adriana Sabbatini and with the most beautiful voices of Italian dubbing in what were once the spaces of the former prison, where prisoners lived, and which today are classrooms of the Calabria Acting School, where boys and girls study to make their dreams come true, which are also ours”, admitted the Director of the School Walter Cordopatri.

Can it be done!? The more time passes, the more we are convinced that yes, one step at a time, with humility and passion, it can be done!
